The Search for The Best Lunch Spots in Great Falls: Craig Tap House

Okay maybe technically this place isn’t in Great Falls but it is on the way home to Great Falls from many, many places. For instance Helena, Lincoln if you happened to come home through Wolf Creek, and of course fishin’ on the Missouri. Normally it is just a watering hole stop to fortify for that long I-15 drive home, but sometimes you just gotta have yourself a late lunch.

Technically the food vendor is Stonefly Grill, and it occupies a small kitchen area off to the side of the Taphouse seating area. Used to be out front in a food truck/trailer, but now inside.

This grill serves up some really tasty burgers. Not a great deal of selection but all very tasty. My favorite is the Poblano Cheeseburger, advertised as a 1/3 lb burger “smoke roasted poblano, pepper jack cheese”. It has a real good bun, too.

Normally this burger is very very tasty, but on this particular day the big slice of poblano was not roasted at all, just a raw slice of poblano flesh thrown on top of the burger. So that was somewhat of a letdown. Fries on the side are excellent.

The cost of these burgers has really gone up in recent years, to $19 each, so add that to a $6 beer or cider and tip and this becomes a pricey special occasions lunch, not an every week lunch.

They also have some pizzas and other stuff I never tried but have seen other people eating.

Mostly open afternoons during fishing season. Maybe not Mondays. If they are open in winter at all it’s just a couple Saturday evenings a month so you really cannot go there for lunch.

Good atmosphere if you don’t mind out-of-state fly fishiemen, good service, good beer, and usually very good food. A top choice place – if you have spare money.
